*** REVIEW*** Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

Call the Midwife by Jennifer Worth

Jennifer Worth came from a sheltered background when she became a midwife in the Docklands in the 1950s. The conditions in which many women gave birth just half a century ago were horrifying, not only because of their grimly impoverished surroundings, but also because of what they were expected to endure. But while Jennifer witnessed brutality and tragedy, she also met with amazing kindness and understanding, tempered by a great deal of Cockney humour. She also earned the confidences of some whose lives were truly stranger, more poignant and more terrifying than could ever be recounted in fiction. Attached to an order of nuns who had been working in the slums since the 1870s, Jennifer tells the story not only of the women she treated, but also of the community of nuns (including one who was accused of stealing jewels from Hatton Garden) and the camaraderie of the midwives with whom she trained. Funny, disturbing and incredibly moving, Jennifer's stories bring to life the colourful world of the East End in the 1950s.

***WARNING!!! REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ IT ALREADY!!!!!***

I bought this as a set of all 3 of Jennifer Worth's books.  I had started watching the TV series just before buying these, and really enjoyed it (I am halfway through season 2 now). The characters in the show are brilliant, all the actresses and actors done an amazing job.

Onto the book....

It took me a long time to get round to reading this properly, but when I did, I could hardly put it down! What a fantastic book of stories from Jennifer's days as a midwife in the East End. The first thing I remember thinking about this book, was how different everything really was back then in the 1950s, to what it is now. Midwifes rode on bicycles to get to their patients, the women were afraid of giving birth in hospitals and therefore opted for a home delivery almost every time. But the living conditions were so different. Jennifer talks about families with 6-10 children, cramped into a small 2 bed roomed flat, no toilet (they shared one in the middle of the housing block), washing hanging from the stairs and lines hung across the rooms.

Each chapter brought something different to the book. There are 2 paragraphs of the book I remember fondly, and wanted to share with you.

In a chapter called 'The Bicycle', which was all about Chummy, you meet a lovely young fellow called Jack. A young boy, who befriends Chummy when she is learning to ride her bicycle, and helps her along the way. Once Chummy can ride by herself, Jack walks with her to her night appointments, to make sure she is safe. They say he was like her protector, bodyguard. Chummy does something really nice, and asks her father to buy Jack his own bicycle.  The end of the chapter goes like this:

Twenty five years late, a shy young girl called Lady Diana Spencer became engaged to marry Prince Charles, heir to the throne. I saw several film clips of her arriving at various engagements. Each time when the car stopped, the front nearside door would open, and her bodyguard would step out and open the rear door for Lady Diana. Then he would stand, jaw thrust forward, legs slightly apart, and look coolly around him at the crowds, a mature Jack, still practising the skills he had acquired in childhood, looking after his lady.

This passage gave me goosebumps (and again just typing it out). I thought this was wonderful, and made me so pleased to think if Jack like this.

Another goes like this:

He chatted happily all the time we had our tea. I told him how much I liked and admired his family. He was a proud father. I told him how impressed I was that they all spoke Spanish so fluently.
"They're a clever lot my kids, they are. Cleverer than their old dad. I never could pick up the lingo, meself."
Quite suddenly, with blinding insight, the secret of their blissful marriage was revealed to me. She couldn't speak a word of English, and he coulnd't speak a word of Spanish.

This was a chapter about Conchita and Len warren, a very happily married couple who had just had their 24th child! I loved this couple, both in the book and on screen.

The characters of this book really stand out. The only thing I have to say is that the 2 midwives, Trixie and Cynthia, aren't in the book very much, and are in the TV series quite a bit. That may change in book 2 and 3 though, I don't know yet until I read them. I feel a bit strange calling them 'characters', as they were real people, not fictional, but lets go with 'characters' for now.

Jennifer is the main character (obviously), and is such a great lady. You can feel her love for what she does all through the book. Although at time,s he has admitted, she felt like she couldn't go on, she got nervous in certain situations, but she always plowed through, got things done. She cared very much about her patients, Mary in particular stands out in my memory.

I love Sister Julienne, and really enjoyed reading about her. She semed like a very strong woman, but very caring and forgiving.

Sister Evangelina was a funny one. A big woman, with not a lot of patience :D But in her own way, she cared about every one of her patients, and knew just how to converse and react around them (read the chapter about Mrs Jenkins and you'll know what I mean!).

Sister Monica Joan, bless her, a lovely sweet old lady, who babbles on about lots of things that have nothing to do with the conversation! She often talks about the stars, the planets and all things space related.

Sister Bernadette I can't remember being in the book much, but her character on screen is so warm, I can't see how anyone would fail to like her.

Trixie and cynthia, like I said, weren't in the book much, but I'm hoping they will be in the other 2 as their characters on screen were very likeble indeed.

Fred, bless him, is the general handyman around Nonattus House. He always has some scheme on the go, whether it be maiing Toffee Apples in his kitchen, or keeping a pig to raise and sell!

There were other chapters which gripped me, and I have to say, the one which got me the most was the last chapter of the book. Frank and Peggy. I'm sure this will carry on into the next book, as I remember seeing so much of theri story in the TV show. A very heartfelt story between these 2, but I will not spoil it for you. All I will say is if it goes like the TV show did, tissues will be at the ready.

This was an amazing book, and I think everyone who reads it will really enjoy it. Jennifer does a great job at re-telling her stories, and really pulls you in to what it must have been like for all those living in those days. If you haven't already read it, I suggest you grab yourself a copy, and get comfortable on the sofa :D I gave my copy to my next door neighbour the minute I finished it!

Our day at the Bon Jovi Concert, Sunderland!

Hi guys

Well on Wednesday we were at the +Bon Jovi concert in Sunderland, and it was bloody fantastic!!

We set off at around 1pm and went over to Sunderland. We wandered around the town for a little while, then found a chinese buffet to go to for dinner. It wasn't great, but it was food right?! Chris's (OH) mate came to pick us up (Darren), dropped his taxi off at the office, then the 3 of us walked over to the stadium. Got straight in, and straight in to the Golden Circle part! This was about 4pm.

Here's me and Chris before the show >

The stage was set up to look like a giant car and it looked great!

At around 6.30pm I think the first support band came on 'As Kings and Captains' who won the chance to play there. Then at around 7pm Sunderlands own +The Futureheads were next. Both bands were good, As Kings and Captains had a more rock feel, where +The Futureheads had a feel of Lindisfarne.

After a little wait, +Bon Jovi came on at 8pm, and opened with the fantastic 'Thats What the Water Made Me'.

Here's the set list (courtesy of Setlist.fm) :
    1. That's What the Water Made Me
    2. You Give Love a Bad Name
    3. Born to Be My Baby
    4. Raise Your Hands
    5. Runaway
    6. It's My Life
    7. Because We Can
    8. What About Now
    9. We Got It Going On
    10. Keep the Faith
    11. Lost Highway
    12. Whole Lot of Leavin'
    13. Captain Crash & the Beauty Queen From Mars
    14. We Weren't Born to Follow
    15. Who Says You Can't Go Home
    16. Rockin' All Over the World
      (John Fogerty cover)
    17. I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
    18. Bad Medicine
    19. Encore:
    20. In These Arms
    21. What's Left of Me
    22. Wanted Dead or Alive
    23. The Fighter
    24. Someday I'll Be Saturday Night
    25. Have a Nice Day
    26. Livin' on a Prayer
    27. Always

Note: Phil X was filling in for Richie Sambora

The show was amazing as always, although I have to say the fans didn't seem to be as excited as I'd thought. When singing Bad Medicine, Jon walked around the walkway which went between the VIP section and the Golden Circle. We got pretty damn close! Here is a pic I got > I was so excited! I screamed a hell of a lot, and could not actually believe he was right there infront of me!

Here is a pic Darren got (he'll not mind me using it!) <

The concert finished at 10.30, a 2 and a half hour set and it couldn't have been better!

Always was played as the final sing, and Jon was on form with his notes.

A great night was had by all :D Off to see them in glasgow on July 3rd, so another post will be on its way then!

Elyzabeth M VaLey's here with her new release: Spanish Diversion!!

Today Elyzabeth M VaLey is here with her new release Spanish diversion :D

Ever since his last boyfriend labelled him as predictable and boring, Shane has gone out of his way to demonstrate that he’s not. He’s moved to Spain, taken a job as an English teacher and decided that partying all night long is going to be his thing. Fun first is his new motto, regardless of what his heart has to say about it after meeting Alejandro.

After leaving his bed without even a goodbye, Alejandro thought he’d never see the sexy American again, so when he reappears in his life he can hardly believe his luck. With a chemistry between them that is off the charts, he wants something more than just a night of passion.

Shane insists he just wants to party but Alejandro is determined to make him see that, together, they can have much more than just fun.

1. What gave you the idea of writing a Spanish themed story
It was inevitable! *grin* I live in Spain, in the city of Madrid.
I had been toying with the idea of having a story that took place here for quite some time. As a matter a fact, A Dragon’s Heart, A Demon’s Blood, starts in Madrid but the protagonists soon have to flee the city. In Spanish Diversion, that doesn’t happen. Not only is one of the lead characters Spanish but they also visit and explore different parts of the region.

2. When did your characters first pop into your head?
Shane has been around since 2011 or so. When I first came up with the idea for this story it was a male-female romance, but when I picked it up some time later I realized part of the reason why I wasn’t getting ahead with the story was because Shane was not with the right partner. Soon after that epiphany, tall, dark and sexy Alejandro came along.

3. Did it take you long to write the story?
Yes and no. I procrastinated a lot with this story, but when I finally sat down to write “for real” it took me about 2 weeks or so.

4. Without giving away any spoilers, was the story always straight forward for you to write, or did it pop up any surprises along the way?
Once I got down to it, it was surprisingly straight forward, however, like I’ve mentioned above, there were quite a few bumps in the road.

5. Last one, what words of advice do you have for aspiring writers out there (such as myself ;p)?
Write, write, and write some more. Also, don’t let anyone bring you down. Writing is a subjective business. What one publisher/reader hates another might love.

Great answers, and the book looks great Elyzabeth! Congrats on the new release :D

Author Bio
Defined as weird since she was about eight, Elyzabeth honors the title by making up songs about her chores, doodling stars and flowers on any blank sheet of paper and talking to her dog whenever he feigns interest.
Losing the battle to the voices in her head is her favorite pastime after annoying her younger sister with her singing. Writing stories full of passion and emotion where love conquers all is her happy pill and she'll forgo sleep to make her readers live the dream.

20 This or That Questions with... Dianna Hardy!!!!

 Hi guys!

Welcome Dianna Hardy here today answering my lovely (and rather random) 20 questions! Come on in woman!

Food

Sweet or savoury?
Most of the time savoury; occasionally, sweet.

Salad or sandwich?
Sandwich

Macdonalds or Burger King?
Neither. But if I have an odd craving for junk food, it’s usually KFC. Oh wow I totally agree!!! KFC is the best!

White meat or red meat?
Depends on the meat and how well it’s cooked: succulent chicken and rare steak that’s cooked in the right way are my favs. We are so on the same wave length here!

Entertainment

Bon Jovi or Guns n Roses?
Ha! Bon Jovi. Totally!

Movie or book?
Completely dependent on my mood. Movies are nice ‘cause you can share that with your family. Books, you have to do by yourself. I try to share books with my OH, he is rarely interested :/

Movies or TV shows?
These are hard questions! I can’t choose! Haha

Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings?
LOTR

Damon or Stefan Salvatore?
I don’t watch Vampire Diaries, but Ian Somerhalder has those awesome eyes – I could look into those forever. Are we the same person here?!

True Blood or Vampire Diaries?
True Blood

Friends or Sex and the City?
Friends

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Star Wars! What kind of question is that? Nothing beats Star Wars!?!? :p Lol! I agree, some people don't!

Random

Dominance or submission?
Oooo … well, that would depend on who’s in charge of the other.

Kisses or hugs?
Depends on who you’re partnering with … wow, sorry, my answers are so dependent on things!

Bath or shower?
An easy one! Shower.

Call or text?
Text.

Date night: stay in or go out?
Going out if it’s very posh and civilised (no loud night clubs, please), followed by a sexy staying in ;) I can't do nightclubs anymore either!

Singing or dancing?
Erm… the one that will have me looking less stupid. HaHa!!!

Vanilla or kink?
There’s room in my life for both, and vanilla’s damn nice if done right.

Cotton or satin?
Cotton. Satin always sounds nice, but you end up sweaty and clung to it, and making patches on the hard to clean material… ugh … you know what I mean. :/

Anything you'd like to add, or anything new you'd like to tell us about while you're here?

No, I’m sure you’ve had enough ;) And if you haven’t you’ll get an eyeful of what I write over at www.diannahardy.com

Thanks for stopping by Dianna!!

Thanks so much for the crazy questions! Dianna xxx

Nancy Jardine is here, find out why.......

Nancy Jardine is here today talking about the locations she chose for her novels

Oh, and I'm over at her blog today too

http://nancyjardine.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/welcome-wednesday-with-dee-little.html

Locations in novels…why do we choose what we do?

My debut ancestral romance novel Monogamy Twist is set in Yorkshire, England. No one, as yet, has actually asked me directly why I chose to set it in rural Yorkshire, although I kind of expected that someone might.

Monogamy Twist, a sensual romance, was published by The Wild Rose Press, a mainly e-book publisher though they make available their longer novels as POD availability on Amazon and other outlets. The Wild Rose Press is based in New York - a publisher which has a largely US readership. So why did I not decide to make it about a tumbling down, rambling manor house in the US? One that seemed to be old and decrepit, but actually wasn’t that old?  Or why did I not set it in southern England in areas that might be more familiar to a world wide audience? My reasons for choosing Yorkshire came about like this…

The plot of Monogamy Twist transpired from me watching a current TV adaptation of a Charles Dickens novel, while I was also making my first foray into ancestry researches of my own family. My ancestry researches were throwing up all sorts of interesting things. I was intrigued about the twists and turns that history can take and how it can make for convoluted searching to uncover the real story.

I decided to make my own contemporary version of a weird Dickensian bequest - of a slightly dilapidated sizeable house and estate being left to a guy who has absolutely no idea about the person who has named him as beneficiary. Luke Salieri wants to find out why he has been named, but he needs someone to help him and in the best Dickensian traditions there are quirky conditions for him to fulfil in order to be the eventual owner of the estate. A marriage of convenience theme was the most obvious one to use for this! I admit it was a bit contrived but my heroine, Rhia Ashton, just happens to live next door to the old estate, loves it, and is an ancestry researcher. Now how convenient is that?

I then had to think about a location. I’m Scottish and setting a ‘Dickensian’ type story somewhere in Scotland just didn’t ring true, although I have based my contemporary fun mystery romance Take Me Now on a fictitious Scottish island off the west coast of Scotland. (Why I chose that setting is the stuff of another blog post!)  For Monogamy Twist I wanted it to be somewhere in England, somewhere that a beautiful old property could have endured in such a way that the fabric was a bit neglected in recent decades but that it had been well looked after during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. A place that in essence is a veritable museum that has been mothballed for decades – do any lovers of Dickens see a similarity here?

When I began to write Monogamy Twist I was also doing rewrites to my historical novel The Beltane Choice. Set in AD 71, Britannia, The Beltane Choice largely takes place in the territory of the Brigantes- a lot of which is present day Yorkshire. The locations for The Beltane Choice straddle the areas we now term the border between Scotland and England. That choice of location pandered to my ‘Scottish’ need since Nara is of the Selgovae tribe and because Lorcan is a Brigante it meant I could write about the Roman invasion of ‘Yorkshire’ as well. You could say Yorkshire was on my mind at the time. It was also a contributing factor that I had recently made a visit to York for a niece’s graduation ceremony and Roman York (Eboracum) – i.e. the tourist sites  - were fresh in my mind.

Back to my planning Monogamy Twist. I looked up the internet specifically to find out about properties in Yorkshire that were sizeable enough to have land attached, yet were not enormous. I found sufficient to know that setting my ‘Greywood Hall’ in rural Yorkshire was feasible. I’ve not been all that often to places in Yorkshire but I love the versions of pale pink and cream stone that were used in some of the very old houses I’ve seen. I adore York itself with all its myriad of stone colours and buildings of all ages. A more typical red building might also have been possible but in my imagination ‘Greywood Hall’ is of a paler hue.

Being set in Yorkshire also meant I could imagine that a neglected rural property could remain intact and be less prone to malicious damage, the house being away from main roads and not visible except to those who purposely enter the gardens.

For me, Yorkshire was the perfect romantic setting, exactly what I needed for what turned out to be my debut sensual romance.  The cover artists at The Wild Rose Press ask the author for basic book details and then its over to them, the author having little input after that initial stage. When Kim Mendoza, cover artist, sent me her design I was delighted. Although the architecture of the house featured doesn’t match my descriptions Kim had managed to capture the essence of it in the pale stone. For a world wide audience it has an ‘Englishness’ about it which is perfect.

I don’t know how you choose your settings but mine have come about from personal experiences. If you’re also an author, I’d love to know what makes you make your choices.

Thank you, Dee, for having me on as your guest today! I love visiting new blogs and meeting new readers.

Free online short read, by me :)

Hi guys!

Today I wanted to post a short story (only 602 words), and share with you. It's called Mile High, and the characters unexpectadly burst into my head yesterday afternoon. Hope you enjoy :D

Mile High
Was she mad? She didn't do things like this! Would he even come? Perhaps the fact she was so excited about eventually getting away on holiday for 2 weeks alone, had sent her a little crazy! Yes, that had to be why. She would never in a million years have enough courage to do something like this. But that guy was damn hot. And he had been looking at her for the last hour on the plane, smiling, staring, winking. She hadn't been laid in a while, a long while actually, but surely that shouldn't have made her insides burn like they were on fire when he smiled at her. How she plucked the courage up to write that note and drop it on his lap, she would never know! Now she was regretting it. 'Toilet, 2 minutes, meet me' the note had read. But now she was having second thoughts. 'Never mind' she thought, as she bottled it, and unlocked the door hurridly.

She opened the door to go back to her seat, and felt two hands push her back in. She almost screamed out 'What the fuck!' until lips came crashing down on hers. Someone pushed her way back against the wall, and locked the door again behind him. She could taste the whiskey on his tongue, as it danced around with hers. His hand made its way up her leg, under her skirt. She lifted her leg up to give him better access, as he moved towards her panties. With their bodies pushed up against the wall like this, there wasn't much room left, but she was sure they'd make do. Her hands were wrapped around his neck, one of his on her thigh, the other on her face. She groaned as he reached under her panties and in one smooth move, ripped them clean off. She could feel the moisture dripping down her thighs. His fingers rubbed against her sensitive button, she gasped as he lifted her on to the sink. As he played with he clit she unbottoned his trousers, eager to see what he was hiding inside.

She wasn't dissapointed when she pulled at his boxers, and his cock sprung free. It was big, bigger than any she'd had before, and looked so enticing, glistening with pre cum. She could feel herself nearing climax as he played with her now throbbing nub. He stopped and reached into his back pocket, the rip of foil unmistakable, his cock now fully sheathed. She edged her ass forwards, and wrapped her legs around his waist. She stared right into his piercing blue eyes, and impaled herself on his cock. He thrust so deep she saw stars. The pace quickened, her clit rubbing on his skin, each thrust brought her closer and closer. Faster and faster they moved together, in perfect rhythem. She could no longer hold it, and let out the biggest moan, as her body gave in and soared over the edge. Her muscles tightened so quickly, he came within seconds. Groaning in her ear, pulling her in tighter, he spilled himself in her. After sitting like that for what seemed forever, but was possibly only a couple of minutes at the most, he pulled out, pulled his trousers back up. She carefully climbed down from the sink, her panties were destroyed, so she threw them in the bin. They looked at each other and smiled, heat flushed in both of their faces, evidence of what had just happened.
'I'm Katie', she smiled
'I'm Michael, so you're staying in Malibu for 2 weeks too?' he grinned.
