Writing Erotic Romance.... Do you tell people what you do?

So as the title says, if you write erotic romance, do you tell people what you do?

I've been thinking about this question lately. I think it was last weekend, my dad and sister were here and we were talking about one of my fabulous author pals, and my Dad said 'Dee, you should definitely write a book'. My sister popped up and answered for me with 'she is, but they're rude books', and giggled. I actually looked away from my Dad! I mean, come on, does he want to know that I'm dabbling with writing erotica? Which made me think, why not? Would he not be proud of me? Of course he would, I know he would. But I know some others have not been in that situation. I asked the following question to a few author friends of mine, and this is what they said:

You write Erotic Romance Novels. Do your Parents/Family/Friends know what you do? How do they feel about it?

Well Parents are no longer with us, but they'd  be pleased I'd followed my dream. Probably not read it though. Family and friends around? Mixed. Some love it, some don't care one way or the other, some ( so called friends) mutter disgusting. Some are proud I write, but don't like what. ( erotic? Argh lol) Some are very supportive. So the answer there is mixed!
Raven McAllan

The people close to me know. The ones that matter to me don't care what I write. If anyone minds they haven't told me.
Kiru Taye

My mother keeps asking me when I'm going to write something SHE can read. Otherwise, she doesn't really care. Some of my SO's family were derisive, but I don't think its any of their business. Most of them are noncommittal- or at least, they don't say anything to my face.  LOL
Lee Brazil

I write under my own name so, yes, everyone does know what I write. I've long ago decided, I am me, and if you don't like it, that's just too bad. After all I don't force anyone to read my books.

Having said that, on the whole, friends and family have been mostly supportive. Some I've never had that conversation with. Others openly read my books and that's lovely.
I had a hysterical conversation with a friend over the summer. She said, "No offence but I shall never read one of your books, because I could not look you in the eye afterwards."
We had a good giggle and that was that.

That is not to say, I've not had my fair share of disapproving comments, because I've had them, but I've got a pretty thick skin, and let them roll off me. I'm proud of what I write, and I have my husband's full support, which is all that matters.
Doris O'Connor

This is a complicated question for me.
My dh is aware that I write erotic romance. Up until recently, he was not happy that I enjoyed writing Paranormal erotic romance. It did not sit well with him. So I continued but did not make it obvious. This meant I did not tell other members of the family and only a few VERY close friend were told.

Recently, my dh and I had another chat and were cleared up some of his concerns. We are now in a place where he knows I write, he does not wish to know the details and I keep it away from the real me - I use a pen name. This suits me as I need to be careful because of the job I do (Yes I am a super spy!)

Once my children are older, then I will be more open with wider family and friends.
Until then, this is a compromise and it works at the moment
Michaela Rhua

I've written one erotic romance. I thought maybe I could, decided I would, and I did. It took a year from meeting someone who gave me the inspiration to it being published. I got caught up in the excitement, the camaraderie and the author bonding. I loved the editing and being involved in the cover art. I liked the challenge of turning things around in tight timescales while having a proper day job. I felt involved, included and supported.
But all the time I was wondering who I could tell, who I should tell, who I shouldn't ever tell.
I thought I had that sorted but I was wrong. I told too many people.
Only my very immediate family know I've written my book and I thought I'd picked the close friends I could share it with too.
Turns out that some "friends" have strict boundaries and as a straight male writing "gay porn" I'd smashed straight through those boundaries.
I was almost giggly with excitement when I appeared on Amazon, when I had an ISBN, when people could actually buy my book.
My book.
For sale.
For real.
And within days that excitement was trampled underfoot.
Why would anyone even want to write that sort of thing? What kind of pervert buys it? Are my children safe to be left alone with him?
For a long time I wished I'd never written it. I deleted all my blog posts and set about removing any trace of anything that could lead from my author self to my married, male, straight self. I deleted my author Facebook page, my Pinterest and Twitter accounts, my Authorgraph account.
But now it's some months later and there are real friends who know and find it amusing, who are proud of me and what I've done. The close knit author groups on Facebook are still there for me as they were before and during it.
And I might, just might, write another one.
But this time I'm only telling you - because you get it.
Faberge Nostromo

My family knows that I write dirty things, but they choose not to comment on it. They are proud of me and what I have done with my writing, but I believe they are in denial about how hot things get, lol. My friends chalk it up to me and my dirty mind! :-)
Megan D Martin

My OH knows what I do, and he is fine with it, he is happy with what I do and encourages me. My sister knows and is good with it too. And thanks to said sister, my Dad obviously knows lol, and he didn't say anything except 'hey you could end up like that Fifty Shades of Grey lady, selling millions of her book!' So I assume he'd be good with it too!

Do you have an answer to share to my question above? Let me know in the comments :D

Bad Juju by Dina Rae book tour AND author interview :D

Title: Bad Juju

Author: Dina Rae

Genre: Horror

Publisher: Self Published

Formats Available In: Digital

Release Date: September, 2o12

Blurb: Two teens turn to a Voodoo bokor to right a wrong. Their curiosity with the dark arts backfires into obsession.

Lucien Nazaire flees his Haitian homeland and settles in a Wisconsin trailer park filled with elderly tenants. He hires sixteen year old Jake for odd household jobs. The boy proves to be the perfect candidate to pass on his Voodoo legacy.

Jake LaRue lives in foster care with his abusive uncle. The Voodoo gives him a sense of power within an otherwise helpless situation. Despite his loner status, he instantly connects with Henry, his only friend in high school.

Henry Novak has Asperger’s Syndrome. He fixates on historical events, most recently the 2010 Haitian earthquake. Like Jake, he becomes passionate about the dark side of Voodoo. They learn how to cast spells on those they hate and lust.

Months after the Haitian earthquake, Henry convinces his family to volunteer for the island's reconstruction. Their mission turns into a nightmare when he mysteriously walks off of the campsite and returns in a catatonic state.

Bad Juju is a balance of horror, romance, and literary fiction intended for adults and mature teens. The plot uses research involving the Voodoo religion.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW

1. Please tell us a little about yourself.
I am a wife, mother, teacher, coach, Christian, self-proclaimed expert on conspiracy theories, and avid tennis player. I love to read and write.

2. How did you come up with the idea for your book? Bad Juju is a mixture of my experience with teens, Voodoo, paranormal, and religion in general. I wanted to write something with unique characters and authentic elements of the Voodoo religion.

3. When did the characters first pop into your head? A rough draft popped up from the first page and then took a life of their own through imagination and other people that I know. I was sad once the book was finished, like I wouldn't be seeing them again.

4. Without giving away any spoilers, was the story always straight forward for you to write, or did it pop up any surprises along the way? I used a rough outline and rewrote the ending three times until I was satisfied. My intention was to entertain and inform the reader about Voodoo. Hopefully, the characters made some kind of connection.

5. Where do you like to write? I have an antique Queen Anne desk that I bought for $25 at a thrift store in my den, but I will write anywhere. I bring a notebook with me at all times. It's amazing how much down time you have when you are waiting at the doctor's, for your kid, at a softball game, etc.

6. Do you read a lot? I love to read. Some of my favorites are Preston and Childs, King, Thor, Martin, and Dan Brown. I like writers who include lots of research in their books.

7. And last but not least, have you any words of wisdom for aspiring writers out there?
I'm really not in a position to give advice. I've been published since 2012. But I will say it's been a hell of a ride! I will say that new writers should try to get as much exposure as possible without spending an arm and a leg in advertising. I love blog tours!

Thanks for stopping by Dina!!!

***REVIEW*** The Babysitter by Kenya Wright

The Babysitter By Kenya Wright

"In my guest room, Blake caresses my neck and surrounds me with his scent, a haunting mixture of rosemary and lavender, so subtle, yet sure to sink into my sheets, so that I can smell him minutes after he leaves and goes to his sleeping wife."

Paige has a problem. She's in love with her married boss, Blake, the father of two kids that she watches. After his wife left him for another man, he hired on Paige as a live-in babysitter. For a year she not only got his household back in order, but helped heal the family's broken hearts.

But, now things have changed.

Before Paige can confess her feelings to Blake, his wife returns. She wants to repair their marriage. Blake thinks it would be good for the kids, but Paige doesn't believe his wife deserves forgiveness and she's tired of hanging in the shadows as the love of her life slips away.

No. Things have definitely changed and Paige is tired of being the good little babysitter. It's time to be very naughty, so wicked that Blake's length stirs in his pants when she strolls by him in thin sun dresses that taunt his view and make his throat go dry from heated lust pumping blood to his veins.

Can Blake stay loyal to his wife and kids or does he find himself in the babysitter's sensual grasp, spiraling down into all-consuming passion?

The Babysitter is an erotic novella at 15,000 words

I bought this book as I saw it reviewed on a friends website, and knew I'd enjoy it. I was pulled in right from the start, and didn't want to put it down. It being a novella, I finished it in 2 short sittings.

Right, I know what people are going to say, 'but the guys married!!!', I know he is. But.... when you read the book, and realize their first encounter was when he and his wife had split up, you kinda feel really sorry for the 2 main characters, Blake and Paige. Blakes wife returns after a year or so of being gone, and decides she wants to try and save their marriage. But is this enough for Blake? Yes he has his kids to think of, which is why he welcomed his wife back into their home, but he has been without her for over a year, and has started to like Paige.

It's a sexy story with some hot scenes, but I thought it was also rather sad. I felt sorryfor Paige loving a man she knew she would probably never have. I felt so sorry for Blake, knowing his wife had left him for another man, he has got on with his life and brought his kids up alone (well with the help of Paige as a live in babysitter), but now the wife thinks she can just stroll back in and all will be forgotten? Well my friends, read this story and see what happens. The last scene in the story is a good one ;)

***REVIEW*** Bow To Your Partner by Raven McAllan

Bow To Your Partner by Raven McAllan
There's dancing and then there's dancing. Mason is ready to move on, but Callan is ready to play once more. Now they have to decide if the dance is right for them.

After Mason's husband died, her interest in the lifestyle they had lived died with him. Until her meddling cousin sets her up with Callan Mackie.

Callan is a Dom without a sub, and he hasn't missed one. Until now that is. Mason hits all the right notes for him, and the chance to play with her isn’t to be missed.

The Dance Studio provides the perfect venue to see if Mason will bow to her partner.

I received a copy of this from the author after winning a competition. I read book 2 in the series the week before last and really enjoyed it, so was definitely looking forward to this one :)

This story centres on Mason and Callan. Mason is set up by her cousin to meet with Callan, and let's just say its a good job they met! Callan is a handsome, strong Dom who doesn't realise he is looking for a Sub until his meeting with Mason.

In the story you find out a lot of things about Masons past, and sometimes it does pull at your heart strings, but the book has a lovely story. Mason seems like a strong lady who knows what she wants, but you see on the inside she is rather vulnerable and scared. Read the story and you'll find out why.

Plenty of good sex, lots of fabulous chemistry, some emotions, and a whole lot of love :)

It's ever growing, and I'm sure it will stay that way!

Title: Spark

Series: The Hellfire Series

Author: Karyn Pearson

Genre: Paranormal, Fantasy

Formats Available In: Digital

Release Date: June 23, 2013

Blurb: For centuries, the powers of Heaven and Hell have been at war, locked in a perpetual stalemate. Fifty years ago, the war spilled out on Earth and the last modern age of man ended. Humanity now finds itself at the brink of annihilation, barely surviving in small pockets of civilization scattered across the globe. But even in the direst of circumstances, the human spirit lives on.

Now, in this post-apocalypse, humanity has but one choice: resist or die. In order to combat the forces of Hell, man has learned to fight, training from their youth to hunt the demons that threaten their very existence.

Twenty-five years ago, a demon hunter dared rise against an ancient demon family, the Saligia—the Seven Deadly Sins—and was cursed for her defiance. The curse appeared in the guise of an innocent: the huntress’s own daughter, Ardentia, who had been born with a demon soul attached to her own.

In the present day, Ardentia, now grown, seeks to free her mother from her curse by hunting down the demons responsible. But the road ahead will be difficult now that the demon within her has awakened. Trusting him is dangerous, especially when he can turn on her at a moment’s notice. Others have warned her that succumbing to the demon will be her own downfall.

Now Ardentia must decide what she’s willing to lose: her mother’s freedom or herself.

Excerpt:

The demon snapped his fingers and the daemonis igni behind Ardentia grew blindingly bright and white-hot, the flames reaching over forty feet high and surging straight toward her. She froze with fear, knowing that in a few seconds she was about to die, burned alive in the fires of Hell.
“Ardentia!” Noxius was shouting. “Run! Run now!”
She was too scared to move. She could not even muster up the strength to take that first step. Somehow, even if she did run away, she knew that the flames or Gula would end up devouring her anyway.
Distantly, she could hear the voices of her comrades, yelling for her to run, to find higher ground, but still, she could not move.
Noxius snarled with irritation, muttering a stream of curses in lingua daemon.
“Idiot girl!” he hissed at her. “I’ve no other choice. I simply cannot allow us both to die here.”
And then an indescribable force slammed against the inside of Ardentia’s skull. She saw bright lights pop in front of her eyes, nearly blinded with pain, and dropped to her knees in a daze. Dimly, she could feel Noxius seizing control; his power coursed through her, flooding her with an unimaginable strength and power that she was incapable of using. Her hand started to reach for the reliquary dangling from her belt, only to feel an invisible hand within her snatching it away.
“What are you doing?” she asked weakly.
“You’ll thank me in a moment,” Noxius answered her.
Ardentia’s eyes fell shut and she thought she could hear the sound of wings being spread then close around her. If she leant to the side ever so slightly, she swore she could feel the leathery velvet of the wing brush against her cheek.
An intense heat passed over her; she realized that it was probably the demonic fire, having reached her at last. She inhaled sharply, preparing to scream as she burned in the hellish pyre, only to find that she did not need to. There was only heat but no flames. She was not burned.
