HI H.C :) Thanks for popping in. Cup of tea? Please tell us a little about yourself

H.C. Brown is a multi-published, bestselling, award winning, author of over fifty published titles under a variety of pen names and publishing houses. She writes in many genres including Historical, Paranormal, Sci-Fi, Fantasy, BDSM, Time Travel, Action Adventure, and Contemporary Romance. In 2011, she was delighted to received nomination in three categories in the 2011 CAPA Awards: Favorite Author, Best GLBT Romance and Best Science Fiction Romance. In 2013, A Tryst in Time was nominated for best Historical M/M in the Goodreads Book of Year Awards H.C writes about strong alpha males in complex settings and her stories have happy endings.

How did you come up with the idea for your book?

It came to me after watching a story about the Bermuda Triangle and the ships that vanish.

When did the characters first pop into your head?

The characters seem to arrive about the same time as the plot. I can see them and of course I pick up stragglers along the way and weave them into the story.

Without giving away any spoilers, was the story always straight forward for you to write, or did it pop up any surprises along the way? 

I’m a pantser, so sometimes I write an entire story around a title or one line I’ve heard in a song. So no I never have an outline or write to a plan. I tried that once and it took all the fun out of writing. For me it’s like reading a story but determinating the outcome. I call it writing without a net.

Where do you like to write?

Anywhere quiet with a comfy sofa.

Do you read a lot?

I read about four books a month, when I say read I mean listen too. I enjoy audio books and they don’t give me eye strain. I also appreciate the melody in an author’s voice.

Who are some of your favourite authors?

Diana Gabaldon, Sandra Brown, Dan Brown.

And last but not least, have you any words of wisdom for aspiring writers out there?

If you want to write, write what inspires you. Join an organization with members who can help you learn your craft. It’s a tough world, you need a thick skin to take the rejections and sometimes bad reviews. The rewards for having a book published and a following of readers may not be in earning a lot of money because very few authors make a living from writing but in the joy of communicating with readers around the world.

The biggest mistake for a new author is to rush their story off to a publisher or agent the moment they write “The End”. Put the story away for a couple of weeks then look at it again, have a few people read the story to make sure it’s perfect before you send it away, then you’ll have the best chance of success. Most of all never give up. If you face a few rejections, it doesn’t mean you won’t succeed and with the millions of publishers out there, one of them will love your story.
